Lok Sabha polls: SAPAKS receives nomination form to field Sher Singh Rana

INDORE: SAPAKS, which has planned to field Sher Singh Rana from Indore, obtained a nomination form for its probable candidate from district election office on Tuesday. Rana was convicted of killing Phoolan Devi in 2014. He is out on bail since October 2016.

“We have obtained a nomination form as we are all prepared to field Rana from Indore. However, if law does not permit him to contest election, his wife Pratima Raje Rana will be given ticket from Indore,” SAPAKS vice-president Jogendra Singh Bhadoriya told TOI.

He added that Rana, who is founder of Rastrawadi Janlok Party (RJP), has decided to contest poll on SAPAKS election symbol as his party was yet to be registered by ECI. On Wednesday, he will move an application before Delhi high court for stay on his sentence of life imprisonment in the murder case of Phoolan Devi. “SAPAKS and RJP will submit an affidavit before the court to support his application seeking relief,” Bhadoriya said.

“I have already spent 13 years in jail and in past two and a half years, no crime case has been registered against me” Rana told TOI.

He added that on this ground he will approach court for a stay on the sentence.

“Rana will need not to seek any permission from district election office if court grants stay on his sentence. But, he will be required to give information about criminal cases registered against him and in which he has been convicted, at the time of filing nomination,” district election officer Lokesh Kumar Jatav said.
