PV Sindhu leads back to SAI Gopichand Academy

HYDERABAD: Nine months after deciding to train separately, PV Sindhu is back to training at the same academy as Saina Nehwal.

In June 2018, Sindhu had asked chief coach Pullela Gopichand to train her at a different venue. Gopi obliged and started training Sindhu at the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy while Saina and other senior shuttlers like Kidambi Srikanth practised at the SAI Gopichand Academy, which is a kilometre away.

If that move - to train alone - was spurred by her setbacks last year, this year's All England reverse, where she succumbed in the first round, seems to have pushed Sindhu to return to the SAI Gopichand Academy.

Confirming the development, Sindhu told TOI on Friday that she has decided to move back in the interest of her career.

"Yes, I started training at SAI Academy. With the new coaches we have, I'm sure it'll help my game," said Sindhu, who does her fitness training at the Suchitra Badminton Academy.

New Korean coach Park Tae Sang joined the Indian camp recently. Women's singles coach Kim Ji Hyun, also from Korea, will arrive in a couple of days. Doubles coach Flandy Limpele from Indonesia has also joined the academy.

'Confident of doing well'

Though disappointed with the first round loss against Ji Hyun Sung at the All England, Sindhu was confident of a strong comeback. "Obviously the loss was disappointing. I played well in that game but made some mistakes. But I have come out of that and will focus on the next few important tournaments this year. I am confident of doing well this year," Sindhu said.
