Couple gets lifetime term five years after killing daughter-in-law for dowry
Bareilly: A Badaun court has sentenced a couple to life
imprisonment for killing their daughter-in-law for dowry in 2013.
The couple had strangled the woman after her family failed to
fulfil their dowry demand.
An FIR was lodged at Civil Lines police station in Badaun on November 22, 2013.
Latoorilal in his complaint stated that he had spent Rs 2.5 lakh on the wedding of his daughter and also gave additional Rs 1.5 lakh cash to her in-laws.
“However, her husband and in-laws have been demanding Rs 3 lakh cash and a motorcycle. As I could not fulfil their demands due to my poor financial condition, my daughter’s husband and her father-in-law Brajpal and mother-in-law Kalavati strangled her.
“Though her family did not inform us about her death, we learnt about the matter from neighbours. When we reached the spot, we found our daughter dead,” said Latoorilal.
Later, however, it came to light that the woman’s husband was juvenile and his case was shifted to the juvenile justice board.
The court on Thursday convicted Brajpal and Kalavati under sections 302 (murder) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sentenced them to life imprisonment.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 each on them, and ordered that half of the fine money would be given to Latoorilal, who fought the case.
