Punjab is looking for CISF security for Sidhu citing ‘ escalating threat perception ’

Chandigarh: The Punjab home department has sought central armed police forces’ security cover for state local bodies minister Navjot Singh Sidhu from the Union home ministry citing “escalating threat perception”.
Earlier, the Congress party had written to home minister Rajnath Singh seeking Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) cover for Sidhu. Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala in his November 17, 2018, letter had said that there is a growing threat perception to Sidhu’s life because he is an outspoken critic of Modi government’s policies

Punjab’s additional chief secretary of home department, Nirmajeet Singh Kalsi, in his January 3 letter to Union home secretary Rajiv Gauba, has stated, “threat perception is only likely to escalate further in view of his strident and continued criticism of the policies of the opposition parties, as well as that of the activities/statements of the ultra nationalist right wing groups.”

Sidhu has Z+ category security in Punjab. The Union home ministry has been informed that Sidhu is expected to campaign throughout the country during the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

The Union home ministry has also been apprised that the threat perception to Sidhu has increased significantly after his recent visit to Pakistan to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, where Sidhu hugged the Pakistan Army chief. “Most recently, Sidhu was challenged by Hindu Yuva Vahini (HYV), a right wing group based in UP, which has announced a bounty of Rs 1 crore to anyone who beheads Sidhu for allegedly ‘abusing UP chief minister’,” reads the letter. It also mentions, “Tarun Singh, president of Agra unit of HYV, said that he would chop Sidhu into pieces if the latter visits Agra.”

The letter says that Sidhu has not only criticized Shiromani Akali Dal’s policies and for their alleged support to the mafia but Sidhu has also earned the wrath of drug mafia, mining mafia and various gangsters and criminals, especially in the Majha region due to his high pitched campaign against them.
