Mayoral Pills: Prabhat Jha to meet BJP councilors, senior leaders
CHANDIGARH: With less than a week left before candidates battle it
out in the mayoral election, BJP national vice-president
Jha is going to meet councillors and senior party
leaders here on Sunday to arrive at a unanimous choice.
The meeting will be held at the party’s Chandigarh office in Sector 33.
Sources in the BJP confirmed that Chandigarh BJP president Sanjay Tandon as well as local MP (member of Parliament) Kirron Kher were recently called to New Delhi, where the senior leadership had spoken to them at length on the issue.
At the two-day national BJP conference which ended on Saturday, sources said the central leadership discussed candidates for the posts ayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor keeping in view the upcoming parliamentary elections.
“The parliamentary elections are crucial for the party and the local leadership has been briefed on it at the conference in New Delhi. The city’s top leaders have been asked to arrive on a consensus about the candidates before fielding them in the mayoral election. With Tandon and Kher both eyeing the parliamentary ticket, they are likely to go with the central mood,” said a senior party leader.
The mayoral election is scheduled on January 18 and the saffron party wants to formally announce the names of all the candidates well in time before the internal tussles cast a negative impact on the voting day, sources said.
