Bageshwar-boy is first in chess champion under-9 of Asia

Nainital: In a significant achievement, an 8-year-old from Bageshwar district has secured first position in list of under-9 chess champions of Asia.
Sadbhav Rautela, a resident of Tyunara village, has got 1800 points in the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE), the body which publishes ratings of chess players across the world based on their performances in international tournaments in various age groups.

Baalam Singh Rautela, father of the boy who works as an insurance agent, told TOI, “Both of my sons took up the game at very early age. Rest is history now."

Sadbhav's elder brother, Saksham Rautela, is also listed as an international chess player with 2123 points in FIDE list in under-15 category.

Sadbhav, a student of class 3 recalls how he first started playing the game.

“I used to observe my father and cousin when they play chess. Evernutally, I also got interested and started playing it,” he said.

Sadbhav has been winning tournaments since the age of 6 in various national and international competitions, such as National Junior Chess Competition, IIFL chess tournament.
